I completed my degree in Computer Engineering (Dipl. Ing.) from the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH), Germany, in May 2007. During my studies I spent 3 terms at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, where I researched topics relating to artificial intelligence and pattern recognition.
My master thesis, written in cooperation with Philips Semiconductors, received the K.-H. Ditze excellency award 07/08 of the TUHH. It covered the design of cryptographical systems on smart cards and cryptanalysis of these systems, including side channel attacks.
I started my PhD at the ETH in July 2007, where I work on the design and analysis of hardware for secure systems. My current research is directed towards the implementation of secure ranging (distance bounding and authenticated ranging). Other interests include security analysis of existing hard- and software in mobile and embedded devices. In two projects, I investigated location spoofing attacks on Wlan localization systems and the GPS. In addition, I am interested in modelling active adversarial interference with physical layer wireless communications.
In 2011, I was working on a summer project on toy-to-toy communication and related novel channel implementations with Disney Research Zurich for 3.5 months.
I successfully defended my thesis with the title "Physical-Layer Security Aspects of Wireless Localization" in March 2012. The current draft is available here.
My publications can be found on our group's publication list.
