SPOT: Secure Positioning (Localization)

The goal of the Secure POsiTioning (SPOT) project is to investigate techniques for the secure location determination of wireless device. This is also known as secure localization. In the past, the problem of positioning in wireless networks has mainly been studied in a nonadversarial setting; this, however, is a non-realistic assumption in many newly emerging scenarios (e.g., alarm systems, verhicular ad-hoc networks). To mitigate possible attacks, several mechanisms have been proposed in the framework of SPOT. These include mechanisms for secure position (location), distance and encounter verification of wireless devices. They enable to securely determine the position of a device, estimate its distance, and track its motion.

Device Identification

In this project, we study remote device identification in wireless and wireline networks and its implications on the security of multi-hop wireless and peer-to-peer wireline networks. This project is funded by the Zurich Information Security Center (ZISC).

Security of Medical Devices

This project deals with the security of medical devices (e.g., pacemakers). We investigate the security and privacy threats against these devices and research ways to detect, prevent, and counteract attacks that aim at compromising these devices.

Jamming Resistance

This project deals with anti-jamming techniques for wireless radio transmissions and wireless networks. We explore ways to detect, prevent, and counteract signal jamming attacks in which a third party transmits targeted jamming signals that disrupt wireless communications between nodes.

Secure Resource Verification

In this project, we analyze the solution space to secure resource verification in the current Internet and design/implement protocols that enable endhosts to securely acquire and verify remote network resources. This project is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF).

Secure Deletion

In this project, we analyze solutions to the secure deletion problem. In particular we provide methods to securely delete data from modern devices working at different levels (user-space, files system, flash translation layer, ...)

Security and Privacy on Bitcoin
Bitcoin is a decentralized payment system that is based on Proof-of-Work. Bitcoin is currently gaining popularity as a digital currency; several businesses are starting to accept Bitcoin transactions. In this project we investigate user-privacy and certain security aspects of this payment system. In particular we analyze the resistance of fast payments in Bitcoin to double-spending attacks, and demonstrate in what ways user privacy in Bitcoin can be compromised if Bitcoin were to substitute cash.

Past projects:

Secure Time Synchronization

In this project, we investigate techniques for secure time or clock synchronization in wireless networks. The use of time information in wireless networks ranges from enabling networking functions (i.e., position-based routing, forming low-power TDMA scheduling) to enabling applications (e.g., event detection and monitoring, emergency and rescue). Therefore, a number of time synchronization techniques have been proposed for pairwise and group node synchronization based on unidirectional and bidirectional techniques. However, time-synchronization techniques are highly vulnerable to signal manipulation attacks and we therefore explore the solution space for securing them.

Authentication over Insecure Wireless Channels

This project deals with message authentication and integrity protection in wireless networks. The main focus of this project is authentication without pre-shared keys and/or credentials. Three proposals have so far emerged in this context: INTEGRITY-CODING, INTEGRITY-REGIONS and reliance on SHORT STRING COMPARISON. Particulary attention in this project was devoted to authentication through presence awarness (i-codes and i-regions).
